Tips for a Safe Boat Ride
A safe boating trip starts with the proper preparation! Use the following tips to help ensure a safe and enjoyable boating adventure.
Gear Up
You’ll want to have all the necessary safety equipment on your boat. This includes life jackets for all passengers, a recently serviced fire extinguisher, as well as flotation devices, and an air horn or flares to signal for help in case of an emergency. It's also a good idea to bring along a first-aid kit and a waterproof flashlight.
Make sure to pack a dry bag with a change of clothes, a towel, and some hand warmers. A GPS unit will help you should you get turned around while looking for the best places to explore. You should also have the equipment necessary to survive a night out in the wilderness should your boat lose function.
Know the Rules and Regulations
Before heading out on the water with your boat, make sure you have a thorough understanding of the local regulations. If you are taking your boat fishing or hunting, for example, look up those relevant laws. This includes knowing the boundaries of the hunting area as well as any restrictions.
Be Cautious
Keep an eye out for other boats and obstacles in the water. Defensive driving is important with boating as well with driving a car! Leave plenty of space between yourself and other boats or PWC nearby.
