History

 

The first stand-up personal watercraft rolled off of Kawasaki’s assembly lines in 1972. Previously, Kawasaki had been known for heavy industry manufacturing and land-based machinery, so this was an innovative step for them.

 

The JET SKI® was the result of several prototypes created from a model by Clayton Jacobson II, a Norwegian-American inventor. After a motorcycle crash in the 1960s, Jacobson decided that riding at high speeds on the water would be much safer than riding on land, so he set about developing something similar to a motorcycle that would work on water.

 

Kawasaki rolled out their designs for the United States market in 1973, and their personal watercraft became really popular very quickly with marine enthusiasts across the country. Sales of JET SKI® personal watercraft skyrocketed during the 1980s and 1990s, especially as Kawasaki further honed their designs to make them more stable and high-performance.
